Biofeedback is a unique form of therapy that can help the body to down-regulate the nervous system. Our nervous system has multiple branches, including the autonomic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system regulates our stress response. The magic of biofeedback is that is brings our autonomic nervous system from a state of sympathetic (fight or flight) to a state of parasympathetic (rest and digest; relaxed).
To accomplish this, five electrodes are attached to the wrists, ankles and around the forehead. These sensors measure and receive information (feedback) about the body (bio). The biofeedback machine then uses frequencies that match your body’s frequencies, which promote relaxation, mental focus, pain reduction and improved energy levels.
Although this is a more alternative method of bringing healing and balance to the body, traditional medicine accepts it, especially related to how biofeedback therapy reduces pain. There are tens of thousands of clinical studies that show that biofeedback can help manage chronic stress. Read one here.
